This prophecy of the Jews’ future status was, sadly, fulfilled. Although “hiss” and “byword” appear separately in the King James Version, they do not always have such derogatory connotations. The coupled term is unique to the Book of Mormon (here and 3 Ne. 16:9) and is clearly derogatory. S. Kent Brown notes: “In Joseph Smith’s day, hiss meant an expression of contempt, and byword had to do with a common, proverbial saying. Thus, the combination of these terms is intended to portray something or someone who is commonly or proverbially held in low regard.”
