“The Prophet”

Joseph F. McConkie, Robert L. Millet

We properly make a distinction between “a prophet” and “the Prophet.” In our day we testify of many who are prophets while normally reserving the phrase “the Prophet” for Joseph Smith, who stands at the head of our dispensation. Zenos was of such greatness that he is properly referred to as “the prophet” (verses 12-15). Of Zenos, Elder Bruce R. McConkie said, “I do not think I overstate the matter when I say that next to Isaiah himself-who is the prototype, pattern, and model for all the prophets-there was not a greater prophet in all Israel than Zenos” (Monte S. Nyman and Robert L. Millet, The Joseph Smith Translation-The Restoration of Plain and Precious Things, p. 17).
