Nephi continues his narrative in terms of its powerful tensions between his own steadfastness and the inconsistencies of his brothers, who veered dramatically between rebellion and repentance. Apparently Laman and Lemuel entered the ship in a humble mood. Nevertheless, as all goes well, they easily “forgot” their earlier reliance on Yahweh’s obvious interventions. Their rudeness is the first sign that they are shrugging off humility.
History: Nephi’s description of being driven before the wind fits with the hypothesis of a departure during the monsoon season, as do the subsequent descriptions of the mighty storm. (See commentary accompanying 1 Nephi 18:20–22.)
