“Were About to Worship Me, but I Would Not”
It is appropriate that we have a great respect for those the Lord has chosen as his leaders, and more especially that we honor the office they hold. It is wholly inappropriate, however, for one man to worship another. When Cornelius fell at the feet of Peter to worship him, Peter forbade him, saying, “Stand up; I myself also am a man” (Acts 10:26). When the people of Lystra attempted to worship Paul and Barnabas as gods the Apostles “rent their clothes” and cried out, saying, “Why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God.” (Acts 14:14-15.) Of the heavenly messenger that visited him, John the Revelator said: “I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God.” (Revelation 19:10.)
