Before embarking for the New World, Lehi and his family journey for eight years in the wilderness. Actually, some LDS scholars estimate based on internal clues in the text that the party covered much of the distance between its first camp and its final destination on the southeastern tip of the Arabian peninsula in less than a year. Their progress was then slowed by hunger, internal strife and bickering, and the consequent loss of divine guidance. However, this is not firmly established in the text itself.
