EVIDENCE: Nahom—Nahom’s Location

Ed J. Pinegar, Richard J. Allen

The location of Nahom is basically settled from early inscriptions. However, the name Nahom is itself significant, especially the consonants N, H, and M. We can assume that when Lehi’s family heard the Arabian name “Nihm,” the word Nahom may have entered their minds. “Nahom” is used in the Old Testament and is derived from a Hebrew verb that means “to comfort” or “to console.” We can assume that the name Nahom was significant to Lehi’s and Ishmael’s families, as this was the burial place of Ishmael (see Echoes, 81–83).
