Why was marriage so important to Lehi?

Thomas R. Valletta

Lehi realized, like all biblical patriarchs, that marriage is central to the plan of God. Nephi records that all eligible sons and daughters were given in marriage. “After reading about the marriages between Lehi’s and Ishmael’s families, we are told that Lehi had fulfilled all the commandments the Lord had given him (see 1 Nephi 16:8). Marriage is central to the Lord’s plans for His children. The First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles declared the Lord’s view on marriage: ‘The family is ordained of God. Marriage between man and woman is essential to His eternal plan’ (‘The Family: A Proclamation to the World,’ 102)” (Book of Mormon Student Manual [2009], 34).
