Why did the Spirit cry out “Hosanna”?

Thomas R. Valletta

HOSHA-NA in Hebrew [means] ‘Save now’ or ‘Oh, save!’” (Woodbury, “Origin and Uses of the Sacred Hosanna Shout,” 18). The first use of the Hosanna Shout recorded in scripture was in the premortal council “when … all the sons of God shouted for joy” (Job 38:7). The multitudes in Jerusalem shouted hosanna to honor Jesus Christ as He rode into the city for the last time (Matthew 21:9). Today, when temples are dedicated those attending shout hosanna in unison. This shout of worship honors the saving and redeeming power of Jesus Christ. It is not surprising that the Spirit would shout hosanna to rejoice in the important details of the Savior’s life about to be revealed to Nephi.
