The nations of the Gentiles would never hear the words of Christ directly, but rather would hear his word as delivered by the power of the Spirit through chosen messengers like Paul and Peter.
Jesus explained to his Nephite Saints that they were a part of his “other sheep,” not of the fold in the eastern hemisphere, and that this announcement was in fulfillment of his word delivered in Palestine (John 10:14-16).
The Savior then pointed out that his earlier saying regarding “other sheep” had been misunderstood to refer to the Gentiles. “And they understood me not,” he continued, “for they understood not that the Gentiles should be converted through their [the disciples’] preaching.
And they understood me not that I said they shall hear my voice; and they understood me not that the Gentiles should not at any time hear my voice-that I should not manifest myself unto them save it were by the Holy Ghost.” (3 Nephi 15:21-23.)
