Although Nephi had concluded the abridgment of his father’s record, he still relies upon the experiences of the family for this account. Since “thirty years had passed away” when he received the commandment to “Make other plates (the small plates of Nephi)” (2 Nephi 5:28–33), his reference to “my proceedings, and my reign and ministry” would include his personal experiences, his political activities as their leader, and his church leadership. Since the second record was to emphasize the “ things of God” (1 Nephi 6:3), the things he included would be of a spiritual nature.
