This verse is a key message of the dream: many will fall away. Like the New Testament’s Parable of the Sower, which shows the divergent responses that people have to hearing the Word of God, Lehi’s dream shows that some people will make it; some will find the tree but later abandon it because they are ashamed; some will get lost along the way; and others will never even try because they are so caught up in the vain things of the world. Lehi personalizes this immediately by bringing his thoughts to Laman and Lemuel in verse 35: his wayward sons, he grieves, will never partake of the fruit.
