Symbolism: Lehi not only notes that the people in the building were mocking, but also that “their manner of dress was exceedingly fine,” connoting wealth. The theme of the wealthy disdaining righteousness and those who lead upright lives is repeated throughout the scriptures. Isaiah condemned the accumulation of wealth through the acquisition of land that displaced the original owners as being contrary to God’s desires (Isa. 5:8). The issue in Lehi’s dream is not wealth per se, but the fact that the wealthy violated the egalitarian principles of the gospel. In Lehi’s vision, the detail of the “fine” clothing differentiates the possession of wealth and earthly acclaim from characteristics essential to bring one to the tree.
The rich/righteous dichotomy often includes the difficulty of the rich in accepting the gospel. In Lehi’s vision, the proud and wealthy mock at the humble followers of righteousness. Christ pointed out that those who desire the world’s commendation receive their reward (Matt. 6:2–16). They wish to follow their own path, not the Savior’s.
