“A Mist of Darkness”

Brant Gardner

Symbolism: Added to the symbols of the tree, the fruit, and the path is the mist of darkness. The tree is the goal toward which the path and the rod lead, but the mist has a dual meaning. It represents both the veil of forgetfulness and the temptations of the world. As the vision begins, these mists do not obscure the vision of the tree. The path is marked and known. This means that we begin our journey in the premortal life knowing the end of our existence. Neither the reward nor the way is hidden. It is not God’s way to obscure either. The mist of darkness arises after we are on the path. Another interpretation is that the beginning of the path represents conversion, while the mist of darkness represents not only temptation but the blindness of past beliefs. These two readings provide different interpretations of the tree of life vision, but symbolism characteristically sustains multiple interpretations simultaneously.
