“Lehi Was Desirous That Laman and Lemuel Should Come and Partake”

Brant Gardner

Narrative: It is the refusal of these sons to partake of the fruit that most impressed Lehi and gave him his announced reason for telling his family about his vision. After personally tasting the delicious fruit and sharing it with some members of his family, Lehi naturally sought his remaining sons. Although the text says only that Lehi saw them and that they would not come, we can surmise that Lehi also called them and made other efforts to persuade them to come. If Lehi had not extended an invitation, they could not have refused it. Only after Lehi was sure that they saw, heard, and understood, did he accept that they “would not come.”
