Why was Sariah so worried?

Thomas R. Valletta

Before Sariah “complained” against Lehi, she mourned over her sons (see v. 1), supposing they had “perished in the wilderness.” What led to these terrifying thoughts of a loving mother? The known enemies in Jerusalem created by Lehi’s divine prophecies might explain much of her concern. Also, the danger of robbers in the wilderness, the distance to Jerusalem and the time it took to traverse it, and the treacherousness of the terrain contributed to her fears. She had, after all, traveled the route herself and knew its difficulty.
