The nation to which Jeremiah and Lehi testified was one given up to wickedness. Zedekiah, the king, was weak and vacillating. False prophets abounded, temple priests were profane and adulterous—the city had become as Sodom and Gomorrah. Self-proclaimed prophets gave the citizenry the promise of peace and encouraged them to walk after the imagination of their hearts, assuring them that they would prosper in such a course (see Jeremiah 23).
